Dojo Casino It's All In The Mind
Introduction to the Casinos
All in the Mind is an exploration of the mental: the mind, brain and behaviour — everything from addiction to artificial intelligence. Airs Sunday 12.30pm Repeated: Tuesday 1.30pm, Friday 2am. In Um Jammer Lammy, he appears in Lammy's dream, in which he tells her that his dojo had been lost (the reason never being specified). However, the dojo remained in his mind, complete with its own casino, which serves as Lammy's inspiration for the game. Also, his song lyrics foreshadow events that would take place later in the game.
Even when the doo-wop era had long already faded during the 60s music scene, the nine-strong vocal group The Casinos managed to achieve a Top 10 hit “Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye.” They came from Cincinnati, Ohio; however, the Casinos’ sound evoked of Southeastern style. The Casinos released a handful of singles, including the minor hit charters “It’s All Over” and “How Long Has It Been” but it is their first single “Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye” (1967) that put them on the map, albeit only for a short time.
Who were the Casinos?
Formed in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1959, The Casinos were a nine-piece doo-wop band who experienced fleeting fame with their 1968 hit “Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye.” The group was led by Gene Hughes along with Bob Armstrong, Ray White and Pete Bolton. Later, Hughes left the group. The slot was filled in by Ken Brady, becoming a member of the act until 1965. The Bolton also left and was replaced by Jerry Baker. Brady also left the group to pursue a solo career and Hughes eventually returned performing with the group. That was also the point when the Casinos became a nine-member doo-wop group.
“Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye” – one of the last great doo-wop hits
The song “Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye” was originally released in 1962 as a country song by Don Cherry and penned by John D. Loudermilk. In 1967, The Casinos issued their own version which became a big hit. It landed at its peak position at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 – a surprising feat considering that the doo-wop era had long been faded. It also reached a respectable #28 on the UK singles chart, after the single was released there on Fraternity label. The follow-up single “It’s All Over Now” was a lesser hit, peaking only at #65 on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite having a modestly-charting follow-up, the Casinos are still considered as “one-hit wonders.”
The song would be covered by a wide variety of artists — Eddy Arnold, Neal McCoy, Andy Williams, Toby Beau and Josh Stone, among many others.
After the heyday
After the Casinos ended, Hughes made a new career as a country record promoter in Nashville for the next 20 years or so. However, he died on February 3, 2004, from complications he sustained from a car accident in October the previous year. He was 67 years old.
